The researchers took samples from the iliac crest bone of the study participants. The samples were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and x-ray computed microtomography.

Using this technology, the researchers examined the bone for the formation of cracks when placed under a mechanical load. They observed how the structure of the bone reacted to the load and the tendency of the bone to form cracks. Participants with vitamin D deficiencies about 30% more likely to develop bone cracks under the load!

Based on the results of this research, and many others, it is obvious that vitamin D is critical for bone health.
