Make Your Own Frankincense Lotion Bar for Joint Relief

Boswellia, commonly called Frankincense, has been valued for thousands of years as a natural remedy for joint problems. Boswellia is derived from the resin of the plant, which is grown in northern Africa. The herb is a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and analgesic.

One the most promising applications for frankincense is in the treatment of osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis and a major culprit behind knee and hip pain. Osteoarthritis is caused by a breakdown of cartilage in the joints. This painful and often debilitating condition affects 28% of adults over age 45 and 37% of adults over age 65 in the United States. Studies show that herbal arthritis remedies such as an enriched frankincense extract could significantly reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis.

And a number of studies confirm that frankincense can help ease knee pain caused by arthritis. Researchers at Cardiff University in Wales believe that the extract from the plant inhibits the production of molecules that cause inflammation and break down cartilage tissue, which leads to joint pain. Another recent study found that the extract of Indian frankincense provided patients with knee osteoarthritis significant pain relief.

One way to include frankincense in your daily regimen is in a nutritional supplement. It is one of three well-researched ingredients in our Joint Formula supplement - a powerful combination of UC-II collagen, AvoVida® and Boswellia Extract (Frankincense) to improve joint comfort, increase flexibility, and support your joint cartilage. The Boswellia Extract provides pain relief that mimics NSAIDs but without the negative side effects of NSAIDs like upset stomach.

Boswellia/ Frankincense can also be enjoyed as aromatherapy and used on the body in the form of lotions and oils. You can make a simple, homemade frankincense lotion bar that is gentle on your skin and provides hydration and vitamins, in addition to the wonderful fragrance. Using it to relax as part of daily massage or meditation may also help reduce stress associated with your joint discomfort.
