5 Tips To Help Alleviate Your Nagging Neck Pain

Are you one of the 6.5 million Americans who suffer from neck pain each year?

In fact, neck pain is ranked as one of the top 5 most common physical disorders in the United States.

For those affected, neck pain can be more than just a physical discomfort. Numerous studies has shown that chronic neck pain can impact social and mental health as well.

If you suffer from neck pain, here are some simple tips that can help alleviate discomfort and get you back to feeling your best.

1. Use Better Pillows

Pillows are great for providing comfort and support while we sleep. However, using the wrong kind of pillows can exacerbate neck pain and disrupt sleep.

So what is the right kind of pillow? Try to use flatter and smaller pillows as opposed to big fluffy pillows. Bigger pillows cause your head to unnaturally jut forward as you sleep. This is particularly true if you sleep on your back.

There are specialized ergonomic pillows that cradle the head and allow the neck to rest in its natural position. These will help promote better posture as well as relieve any unnecessary strain on the muscles around the neck.

2. Practice Proper Posture

Most people go about their day largely unconscious of their posture. However, how we position and hold our bodies while standing and sitting can be a huge contributor to neck pain.

Try to be mindful of keeping your head above your shoulders. Many people with neck pain assume a "forward head posture" in which the head is jutted out in front of the body. This puts dramatic strain on the musculature of the neck.

One good way to fix this is to imagine a string attached to the crown of your head. Imagine that the string is pulling your head up and back so that the back of your neck lengthens. This will help bring your head back in to a proper postural position.

3. Go See a Chiropractor

Chiropractors are physicians that specialize in the maintenance of the musculoskeletal system. They are trained in how to realign bones and tissues to help relieve pain and promote heathy function.

Neck pain is often caused by misaligned vertebrae in the cervical spine. When vertebrae are out of place they can pinch nerves or strain muscles in the neck. A well-trained chiropractor will be able to bring the vertebrae back in to alignment and relieve the tension off the surrounding nerves and tissues.

4. Move and Stretch Regularly

Many of us spend the majority of the day in the same position: sitting. Whether we are sitting at a desk, on the couch, at the dinner table, at a restaurant, or in the car, we are sitting most of the places we go.

Remaining in this same position for too long can lead to bad posture and eventual neck pain. This is why it is so important to get up and move regularly.

If you sit all day, make a habit of standing up and stretching every 45-60 minutes. You can take short walk around the office or the house. You can also do a few easy exercises like raising your arms above your head or folding forward.

5. Take Your Supplements

To prevent bone degeneration you need to maintain adequate levels of bone building nutrients in the body. While it certainly is very important to eat bone building nutrients from foods, it can actually be really hard to make sure you get all of the necessary nutrition for optimal bone health from just food alone.

This is why supplementation with key nutrients is so important for bone health.
