How a Common Nutrient Can Keep Your Bones Young and Healthy

You have probably heard of the disease called rickets.

This debilitating condition, primarily seen in children, causes bone degeneration and skeletal deformities such as bowed legs and rounded spines.

These symptoms are due to a softening of the bones which results from improper calcium deposition.

But calcium is not the cause of rickets.

More Than Calcium

However, while calcium is an important variable in rickets, it is widely recognized that the root cause of the disease is a deficiency in a different nutrient.

It turns out that even if there is enough calcium in the diet children can still develop rickets. This is because the body needs adequate amounts of another important nutrient to effectively absorb calcium.

That nutrient is vitamin D.

Not Actually A Vitamin

Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin. The body can not make vitamins. Vitamins must be consumed from food.

However, the body can make it's own vitamin D. Vitamin D is primarily produced by the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. For this reason and others, vitamin D is actually considered a hormone.

Vitamin D and Bone Health

Vitamin D was recognized as a causal factor in bone health around the time of the Industrial Revolution. As people began to abandon their traditional outdoor farming lifestyles in favor of being indoors and working in factories and offices they spent far less time outside.

This actually when we really began to see the onset of rickets as an increasingly common problem. Interestingly, there seemed to be more cases in Northern latitudes, particularly during the Winter months.

Physicians found that the symptoms of rickets would begin to subside when the children would supplement with cod liver oil which has a high amount of vitamin D.

This was found to be due to vitamin D's important role in the absorption and utilization of calcium in the diet. Without enough vitamin D, the calcium is not correctly deposited in the bones leading to bone degeneration and deformity.

Still Important Today

Due to the fortification of foods and increased availability of basic nutrition, rickets is far less common in most developed nations. However, this does not mean that vitamin D is not an important nutrient to pay attention to!

While most children are consuming enough vitamin D to avoid rickets, there is still widespread functional deficiency of this crucial nutrient in upwards to 85-90% of children in the U.S.!

And vitamin D is not only important for children! It may actually be even more critical for aging adults to maintain adequate vitamin D levels. It has actually been shown in studies that vitamin D deficiency can radically increase the rate of aging in bones leading to degenerative bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

How to get Enough Vitamin D

The best way to get vitamin D is from a healthy amount of sun exposure. Many of us have learned to fear the sun because of the threat of skin cancer and other diseases. But the truth is that moderate amounts of controlled sun exposure without burning are not only safe but actually critical for optimal health.

But the unfortunate truth is that many of us live our lives primarily in doors. We spend the vast majority of our time in homes and offices and do not always have time to get some sun.

Luckily there are a few rare dietary sources of vitamin D. Vitamin D is fat soluble which means it is found in certain fatty foods.

Fatty fish like sardines, tuna, and salmon have high levels of vitamin D. Grass-fed raw whole milk, cream, and cheese will also have naturally occurring vitamin D. Other industrial milk products are also fortified with vitamin D because the unnatural diet of industrial animals robs their milk of this important nutrient. Grass-fed beef liver also has a considerable amount of vitamin D.

However, most people will not consume enough of these foods to make up for their lack of sun exposure. This is why supplementing with vitamin D is so important. We include vitamin D in the Silical System formula for this very reason. Not only does it help the body absorb the calcium in the formula but it also helps make up for the common deficiency of vitamin D that most people are experiencing.

So if you want to keep your bones young and healthy make sure you are getting enough vitamin D. One of the easiest ways to do that is by using Silical System today!
